Setting Goals for 2018:

There are three types of goals: Short term, Midyear goals, Long term goals. Achieving your short term goals should help achieve midyear goals then the long term goals.

Your short term goals can be daily, weekly or monthly. Daily/weekly goals work best for me. I take a look at my schedule for the week, and I determine how many words I have to write daily to make my weekly goal.

All the goals need to be S.M.A.R.T.

S – is specific. How many words or pages can you write? Daily? Weekly? Monthly?

M – is measurable. When writing this is easy. The word count and page count can be found at the bottom of the document. If you’ve set a goal for something else that is not easily measured, then the goal needs to be meaningful.

A – is attainable. If you know you can’t write more than 500 words per day, then don’t set a goal for 2,000 words per day. I like to set an attainable goal then stretch the limit. If I’ve set my goal for 2,000 words, I try to write a few hundred more. Sometimes I’m successful, sometimes not, but in the end I usually attain my goal.

R – is relevant. Is this goal you’re setting rewarding? If the goal is not rewarding, then you probably won’t achieve the goal. If you set a goal to run three times a week and you hate to run, you won’t achieve your goal.

T – is time bound. Set a short term goal to write a book in two months and maybe three books in the year. Whatever is right for you is what you need to do.

Set smaller goals.

These are short term. Constantly check and reevaluate your plans and what you believe you can realistically accomplish. If you have a plan for the year, you can plan for six months and one month.

Stay on course.

Once you’ve decided on your plans and what you can manage given your lifestyle you can constantly review and update as your life changes. Perhaps your short term goal is unattainable. Decide what is realistic and reset your plans.

More tips.

Stay positive

Be precise – there should be now way to question what you’ve set in motion.

Set priorities – If you have one or more plans, say, writing, exercising, dieting etc. make sure you know what is most important to you.

Write everything down – setting you goals on paper makes them real and makes you accountable.

Keep short term goals small and attainable – if the short term plan is unreachable, then it will be more difficult if not impossible to achieve the long term plan.

Achievment.

When you’ve reached your goal, take time to enjoy the exhilaration. For authors that can be writing The End. Celebrate then move on.

Set yourself up for success. Have fun with the goals.
