Tuesdays Tip-Royalty Questions
Royalty Questions
Royalty statements were just sent out for the current quarter. Here is some information that will help answer your questions.
Royalty Schedule
We pay royalties on the royalties we receive from the sellers. It takes the sellers (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, etc.) 2 months to get us the money. Therefore, the quarterly payment schedule will be as follows:
First quarter royalties; royalties we receive in January, February and March (payment by April 30): Actual sales in November, December, January
Second quarter royalties; royalties we receive in April, May and June (payment by July 31): Actual sales in February, March, April
Third quarter royalties; royalties we receive in July, August and September (payment by October 31): Actual sales in May, June, July
Fourth quarter royalties; October, November and December (payment by January 31): Actual sales in August, September, October
Royalty Payment
We pay the author 35% of the royalties we receive from the sellers. Of the remaining 65%; 25% goes to editors, proofreaders and cover artists; 40% is used for advertising, overhead and reinvestment in the business.
Royalty Amount Differences
Different ebook sellers pay a different amount and they have differences within their structure depending on where exactly the book is sold and the price of the book. For example, Amazon has two levels; 70% of the selling price if the book is $2.99 or over and 35% if it is below $2.99 or, in some cases, if it is sold in another country.
The print book royalties are much more complicated depending on the size of the book which helps determine the printing cost and where the book is sold. We use Amazon for our print books. Here is a link that explains that more:
