BLURB: Two Spirit

In 1865 at the height of travel on the Bozeman Trail into the goldfields of Montana, the Nez Perce guide, Five Wounds, finds himself responsible for the newly orphaned, two-spirited being, Rose Baker.  He can feel his heart drawn ever closer to her despite the dangers such a union would bring. Fearing she has possessed him, he agrees to let his family take him for a cleansing sweat to rid him of her bad-spirit. Will Five Wounds be able to sweat Rose’s essence out of his blood? Will his family save him from her evil spirit? Or does Rose and her new protector have other plans for Five Wounds?

EXCERPT: Two Spirit

Five Wounds touched the scar which ran along his jawline. “I received this scar the same day they hit Nicole. While I held her broken head in my lap, one man brought his rifle down and dislocated my jaw. A healer named Wise Talk reset it and sewed up the gash.”

Five Wounds stood and pointed to a scar on his hip. “This was a scrimmage over hunting territory with the Crow.”  He lifted his arm to reveal a jagged scar on his rib cage. “This one was a dispute with the Bannock, and this one.” He pointed to a slash on his upper arm. “Was from a Shoshoni horse thief.” Five Wounds then sat back on the bed.

Rose furrowed her brow. “I count only four. Where is the fifth one?”

Five Wounds appeared uncomfortable, closed his eyes for a moment, then stood and turned. Determined to give Rose reciprocity, he moved aside his breechcloth to reveal one side of his buttocks.

Rose leaned closer to get a better view. On his firm round cheek appeared a bite. Rose sat back and giggled. “Oh dear, I have to know what happened there.”

Five Wounds sat and smiled at Rose. It was his turn at embarrassment. “I was young, I set a snare and caught a rabbit by the foot. When I squatted to release him, the damn thing bit me.”

Rose put a hand over her mouth to stifle her laughter and let him finish his story.

A smile crossed his lips. “I jumped and ran, but the hare did not let go. My cousin beat the animal with a stick. My family called me Tikis-nukt Kenpise Eyukz.”

“Oh, this will be good. What does it mean?”

Five Wounds gave her a broad smile. “Buttocks Bitten by Rabbit.”

“Thank you for that.” Rose again turned her back to him.

Are we friends again?Five Wounds laid flat for an hour and contemplated how to amend the rift he caused. Rose rolled and placed her arm on his chest, in the same manner as their first morning together.

Five Wounds did not move, and his breathing stayed even as he fought his body’s reaction. He assumed Rose rolled over in her sleep until… her hand moved over his body.

Rose drifted to the muscle on his chest, utmost from her. She let her palm rest under his pecks and ran her thumb over his hardened nipple.

It required every ounce of strength in Five Wounds’ mind and body not to move and to keep his breathing even.I am definitely not a brother to her!

Her fingers ran down his stomach and rippled over his abs as Five Wounds prayed Rose’s childlike wonderment of his male form to end. His mind ready to burst, he envisioned his toothless grandfather gumming a buffalo steak as her hand slid to the side of his waist and moved towards his thigh.

Oh, Wyakin, let this end! As he prayed to his spiritual guide, an involuntary spasm twitched his body.

Rose slid her arm back and rolled away. Five Wounds kept his breathing pattern slow and unfluctuating as he felt her nestle up next to him and settle in for sleep. He stayed awake late into the night to reprimand himself for his desires concerning Rose. Do not fall in love with this woman!

Rose enjoyed a deep night’s sleep while Five Wounds endured the most challenging night of his life as he reminded himself why Rose will never be his.
