A Valentine’s Anthology contains three novella stories: The Lending Library by C. L. Kraemer/ Chasing Rainbows by Genene Valleau and The Gift by Christine Young. Each story captures your heart—well, it is an anthology regarding Valentine’s Day, a day we all celebrate the theme of love towards our spouses, family, friends, associates, and of course, our four-legged pets.
Anyway, The Lending Library, owned by a 4-foot 8-inch human, is situated in a house deep into a forest of faeries and nymphs. There is compassion, love, and unfortunately, evil, touching and destroying trees by yellow bulldozer. Some of trees are called the Ancient Ones. Two faeries set out to the city to find out why the trees are being bulldozed down, causing the tree’s tiny creatures’ occupants to flee for their life.
The characters are memorable. A well-written story that captures your heart. The climax is a fairytale ending.
The next story, Chasing Rainbows, deals with normal appearing people in a real world. The main protagonist, Rissa, meets Ian, a detective. Immediately they feel an attraction toward each other. Uncle Horace is Rissa's uncle. He's an inventor of many things. Some our ingenious and practical. Horace's wife, Madelaine, goes missing. Was she kidnapped? Rissa and Ian use all their resources, including Uncle Horace's inventions, to find her.
A great story that keeps your interest from page to page. The ending is also, a fairy-tell ending that reflects the amorous spirit of Valentine's Day.
The last story, The Gift, tells about Elice Weld and her daughter Izzy during the Civil War. Elice is a Southern sympathizer who becomes smitten by Captain Michajah Brooks of the Union Army. The captain and his troops take over Elice’s home. Amorous feelings arise between them. Their love for each other is challenged. The ending is unexpected and one that’s different from any climax to a story I’ve ever read.
The characters are etched into your mind, wanting to know more about them. An excellent written Valentine story during the Civil War that grips the reader with all the emotions: Love, excitement, humor, hate, tragedy and redemption.
