Amazon Reviews: Good Bad Indifferent

How many Amazon Reviews do you need?

Getting Amazon Reviews is important. Books with ten or more reviews are ranked higher by Amazon’s algorithms. These books will be shown more frequently to book buyers.

Amazon Reviews:

I was asked a few days ago by one of our RPP authors “how many reviews do you need?” So I googled the question and found an article on Lifetree 21st century publishing. For a more complete view of reviews, please use the provided link.

Authors need reviews to sell books. Getting those precious critiques is difficult. But I will give you some ways to approach that golden number of ten reviews. When your book is first published, quantity is the key. If you receive a negative review, don’t worry about it. We all know books can be returned on Amazon, so a negative review will simply let a buyer know that perhaps this book isn’t for them. Eventually, you will want quality. After twelve reviews, a buyer will probably not read all that are posted. What the buyer will look at is the star rating. A four to five star rating is something to strive for.

Promotion Group:

Your promotion group is a great way to start compiling critiques of your work.

  1. Ask your family. Hopefully they will leave a quick review. Assure your group the number of words required is around thirty-five, which shouldn’t be too hard.
  2. Friends will help provide a review. If they tell you they don’t have an Amazon account, ask them if they can post on a daughter or son’s account.
  3. Follow up with a periodic and polite reminder.
  4. If you gave them the book, they should follow up with this information and perhaps say, “I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.”
  5. The number of reviews you receive in this manner will depend on the size of your promo group.

Ask Your Fans:

  1. This is a bit vague. If you are a first time author, you might not know who your fans are.
  2. Branding is the key here. You can refer to an earlier article about Branding.
  3. If a fan emails you to tell you how much they loved the book, thank them and ask for a review.
  4. Use Facebook groups to find individuals who write or read the same genre as your book.

Quality In A Review:

  1. Amazon algorithms look at “official top reviewers.” Who are these people?
  2. I think this has varied over the years. Many of the top reviewers are the sites where RPP sends your books. it’s rare these days to receive a review from one of these sites.
  3. To find these you can go to Amazon’s list of Top Reviewers. Go to the Amazon page of popular books in the same category as yours. Check out the Top Reviewers who have posted there. These Top Reviewers are the ones who buyers have rated the review as useful.

Negative Reviews:

  1. If you feel the book was unjustly reviewed, you can ask Amazon to remove the review. You must present a good reason for calling this a bad review.
  2. Check Amazon review guidelines. If the review goes against their guidelines, you can have them reviewed.
