BLURB: Demon’s Song

Alex always wished to see the Overlands, a place of sunshine and freedom. However, as a slave in the far corners of the Underlands, it was all but a dream. That is, until he’s framed for murder and is forced to flee during a demon attack.

Searching for the answers to why he was framed and seeking a chance at the fleeting freedom he’s always dreamed about, he journeys to the capital, meeting friend and foe along the way. But the Underlands are both beautiful and dangerous. Having a demon hunter on his tail and a witch whose sole desire is to become the high Seer around him, he’s in for quite the journey.

EXCERPT: Demon’s Song

“You…you never…you never care about yourself.”

Alex blinked as Rita shook where she stood, head bowed down. “Even yesterday, when you ranted to me, when you finally let me see some of your emotions…almost as quickly as you let them out you withdrew, wondering about me, making sure I got home to my parents. Why? Why do you not care more about yourself?”

“Why should I?” Alex asked, feeling honestly confused and a little disheartened. “According to society a slave…”

“But you aren’t a slave! You have no signifiers! You’re not bound to anything, not into slavery, not into nobility, not even into apprenticeships. You have a chance to choose yet you seem to see yourself as…” Rita finally wilted, her shoulders slumping. “That’s what I don’t get about you. Honestly, part of the reason I brought you home. I wanted to know. Who was this boy? This person who looked so free yet…”

“Free…” Alex muttered.

Rita stepped up to him, catching his eye. “You said you dreamed of the Overlands? Of being able to live? Well, realize that to live you need to allow yourself to live, to be someone not something.” Rita sighed and leaned back, massaging the bridge of her nose. “I honestly did not expect to come upstairs to tell you that but…ugh…fine, if you still want to leave, leave.”

Rita turned and stepped toward the doorway. Alex watched her go before returning his focus to his bag. He never thinks of himself? Of course, he does…he just…Even as he thought that, as he found himself unable to continue, a part of him knew he was lying.

Still…to be seen as someone who’s free…just what did that mean?

He groaned and placed his head in his hands. He couldn’t leave after hearing that. A nagging part of him told him to look, go over the words again. He thought through them, once more, before realizing just what she said.

She honestly felt bound, not just as a noble, but as an apprentice. Even though being a seer was her dream, it was now her only chance of survival, a lifeline that she knew was going to snap at any moment. Still, what could he do about that? This family was so kind to him, how could he honestly repay them?

By staying here, and, after today, helping them deal with whatever happens, a part of his mind supplied.

After much debate he groaned. “Rita?”

“Yes?”

Alex was not surprised to see Rita hurry back into the room, face neutral but eyes dancing in what seemed to be hope. For what? Alex could only guess. “I will stay hidden, let your parents know I’m borrowing this room for now, okay?”

Rita’s neutral expression spread into a wide smile and she nodded. “Alright! You aren’t such a dingbat after all.”

Alex rolled his eyes.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me.” She hurried away; the sound of footsteps ringing down the stairwell resonated into his room, showcasing her happiness.

He just hoped he’d made the right choice.
