BLURB-The Assassin’s Daughter
Her mother was of an alien race, an assassin for hire and condemned to be frozen in a cryocapsule on the penal planet of Slython. Nai Crandell was her daughter, regarded as a half-breed, despised and rejected from human society. She vowed to have her revenge on all humans.
EXCERPT-The Assassin’s Daughter
The triwood logging camp was much the same as the Rim Mercenary’s compound, a tall stockade topped with slicewire and intrusion detectors. Nai watched the merc who dropped her off at the gate disappear down the dirt road on the terratrax, throwing up a roostertail of mud. She turned her attention to the camp, seeing hovertrucks whining by from a dark line of virgin forest, a troupe of loggers heading for the mess hall amid the constant drone of lasersaws and machinery.
“Can I help you, miss?” asked a sentry at the gate.
“Yes, I’m here to see a Mr. Jerry Rigg,” she replied.
“That would be him over by the bark trimming rig.” He indicated a carrot-topped individual supervising a trio of mechanics.
They all glanced over as she approached. “Hi, guys. I’m looking for Mr. Rigg,” she announced.
Carrot-top, wearing bib overalls over an executive jumpsuit eyed her with impatience.
“Look, toots, I already talked with Dropoff City Diversity Department. The work here is too hard for a wedge,” he declared wearily. “Does the concept of upper body strength mean anything to those paper pushers there? Plus, we got all the loggers we need.”
“I heard you were missing at least two. “Nai jammed knuckles into her hips. The three mechanics were looking at her with amused contempt. Rednecks. Am I ever going to get away from them?
Rigg wiped grease from his hands and tossed aside a rag. “What do you need?”
“I’m the pest exterminator the Rim Mercs sent down to deal with your Ghote problem.”
Jerry Rigg blinked. “Excuse me, you’re the shooter they sent to terminate the maneater?”
“Give the man with the thinning red hair a cigar.”
All four were now eyeing her with various expressions of interest. She began to wish she hadn’t chosen to wear the tank top and tight shorts.
Riggs appeared to be pondering a decision. “Okay, if you’re willing to give it a shot, what the hell,” he shrugged. “I heard the Ghote was thrown outta a tribe at a village down by Green Gorge. He was injured in a fight for leadership with the pack head and found out he couldn’t hunt normal prey. Which is why he turned to us for food. He’s carried off two of my loggers the last month.”
“Did any of your men try to track him down and take him out? I mean, you have weapons here, right?”
“We got a regular armory. The last three of my men who volunteered to go out looking for the Ghote never came back.”
“Any idea of where he might be hanging out?”
“There’s a forest trail leading east of the camp where we saw a lot of its footprints. I think he’s got a cave down by Deadman’s Creek.”
“Deadman’s Creek. How appropriate.” Nai shouldered her rifle and checked her gear.
“You’re really serious about going after this maneater?” Rigg demanded.
His three mechanics had stopped grinning and were staring at her with wide eyes.
“As serious as a heart attack.” She gave them a condescending smile. “I’ll let you boys get back to your mechanical problem.”
