BLURB: Whispers Before Death

Whispers Before Death is the first book in the series called Death Agents. Agents of the newly formed Federal Medical Investigators (FMI) investigate mysterious and unsolved medical related deaths. Each agent possesses supernatural powers, helping them solve medical mysteries throughout the United States. Their newest case takes them to Ocala, Florida where eight people throughout the city die at exactly eleven fifty-eight a.m. Each victim whispers something before suddenly dying. No one hears what they’re saying. A Marion County Sheriff Detective, Janet Bennett, is recruited to assist the agents. An immediate friendship develops between F.M.I.’s chief investigator, Simon Woods, M.D. and Detective Bennett. The FMI team and Janet frantically seek out answers to these mysterious deaths before deadly evilness reaches out toward others, including them.

EXCERPT: Whispers Before Death

Janet called Simon. She told him they were leaving Vanguard High School and heading to his school. She glanced at her watch: 10:42 a.m. She sped away from the school. A block away, she put on the police warning siren, flashing headlights and sped toward Forest High School.

Janet stopped her police vehicle at the front entrance of the high school. Simon stood in front of the gym class students, who were standing at the bottom of the concrete stairs. Smart thinkingthought Janet as she got out of the car. Jean quickly got out of the car and walked up to the students. They were standing in horizontal line at the bottom of the steps. She had to be within ten feet of the person for her to visualize a yellow glow. Jean stood in front of the student to her far right. She then proceeded to walk hurriedly to her left. A minute later, she stood in front of the last gym class student. Jean turned toward Simon and Janet. “She’s not here.” No one presented with the yellow, death glow.

Janet glanced at her watch. It was 11:23. They had thirty-five minutes to get to West Port High School and identify the next victim before 11:58.

The gym class teacher, who was standing behind the students, escorted her class back into the school. Simon got into the backseat of Janet’s car; Jean sat in the front seat. Simon called Frank Littlefield on his cell phone and told him that they were on their way to him, and for him to have the students lined up in front of the school. “How long will it take you to get to the high school?”

“About twenty minutes,” she said peering down at the GPS on the front of her car’s dashboard. The time of arrival on the GPS read 11:42 a.m. Janet had downloaded the addresses of all three high schools in the GPS earlier. They’ll have sixteen minutes to identify the gym class student, who’s scheduled to die at 11:58.“It should give us plenty of time. Barring any delays or unexpected circumstances.” She sped away, putting on the car’s siren two blocks from the high school.

Simon leaned forward. “I’m still not sure what we’re going to do once we find the girl. Are we going to tell her that she may only have a few minutes to live? If we tell her this grim news, she’ll likely freak out and scream or cry hysterically. I’d thought we might ask her if she took any medications or street drugs in the past twenty-four hours. Like most teenagers on drugs, she’ll deny taking anything. Unless we see needle marks on her arms there wouldn’t be any way to know if she had taken any drugs, besides doing urine, blood or hair test on her. Which of course would be postmortem. And if she did, depending on the amount taken, it wouldn’t necessarily mean it was the cause of her death. One of the most relevant things to the deaths would be what she whispered prior to her suddenly dying. It appeared to be the common denominator connecting some of the deaths yesterday.”

Janet glanced in the rearview mirror at Simon. “I agree with everything you said.”

“And it pretty much supports Frank’s evaluation of the victims yesterday,” Jean said. “There wasn’t any common smell on the eight victims, eliminating a common denominator.”

“It still amazes me, the three of you having these paranormal gifts,” Janet added to their conversation.

The traffic light ahead turned green. Luck was on their side. If they had to stop for a red light, it would’ve taken over a minute for the traffic light to change back to a green signal. Janet knew the timing on most of the traffic lights in Ocala. A chill engulfed her. She glanced to her left at the stopped vehicles.

Simon peered out the rear passenger window to his right. “Look out,” he shouted as they entered halfway into the intersection and beneath the traffic light.

A speeding black pickup truck was about to crash into them.
